‘FAKE DRAKE’ - CAN COPYRIGHT KEEP PACE WITH TECHNOLOGY
Traditional copyright models have been left in the rear-view mirror with each new technology wave. Think of the movie studios trying to block the release of the Betamax recording device, or the music industry’s desperation to stem the tide of digital file sharing, or luxury brands appealing to Congress and the courts to hold e-commerce platforms responsible for knock-off sales on their marketplaces.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE - A TIDAL WAVE OR A RISING TIDE
On a daily basis we hear the drumbeat of peril that awaits us: ethicists warning of a new arms-race for “designer babies;” politicians speaking of imminent job eliminations in the millions; and Hollywood rolling out the latest dystopian thriller pitting man against machine. At the same time, we hear feel-good stories of the power and promise of AI – a tool that will cure disease, educate and elevate the poor, and transform global economies on a scale never seen before. Well, which is it?
Nick is an Author and Lecturer of Intellectual Property at BU School of Law and an Instructor at the Harvard Extension School where he teaches a course on digital technology and the future of work. He also co-founded and serves as CEO of Fork, a tech start-up incubating at the Harvard Innovation Lab that uses AI to advance employees toward higher-pay and demand occupations. He started his career as an intellectual property litigator at Holland & Knight in Boston and then moved in-house at Microsoft Corp. Over nearly two decades at Microsoft he led numerous legal, IP, and business teams across the globe, including his role as President, Microsoft Technology Licensing, the company’s patent subsidiary. He has since served as general counsel of an AI start-up in the biomed field and as a Fellow of Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs Scholar’s Program.
